Valeria’s Story

Valeria was born in Mexico City, and moved to the US at a very young age.IMG 0779 She has lived in Texas for the majority of her life, having attended both high school and college there.  Valeria discovered her interest in law during high school, and has been pursuing a life in the legal field since. After graduating as valedictorian from her high school, Valeria pursued her Bachelor of Art in Political Science from The University of North Texas, and obtained it in just 3 years. She wants to attend law school and become a lawyer someday, specifically in areas of International Law, but figured it would be wise to broaden her experience in the legal field before going.

During her time in Texas, Valeria focused on more than just school. Having spent the majority of her life playing soccer, Valeria volunteered for GOAL, a leadership program for at-risk students that focuses on; academics, athleticism, and activism.  Once having been in the program herself, Valeria was fortunate to join once again as an “assistant coach”, and see the sense of community and belonging that transpired in every meeting and practice. She also traveled to the Austin Capitol as a UNT student representative to advocate for Flagship Equity funding, an incentive that would ensure students of all backgrounds would be able to receive the same opportunities for education. Moreover, Valeria discovered her passion for traveling in high school when her school hosted an education trip to Spain and France. From then on, Valeria went on to visit England, Greece, Italy, Scotland, and some more parts of her home country, Mexico. During these trips, Valeria’s interest for International Law only grew stronger, as she was able to experience a multitude of cultures and immerse herself in history.

Valeria takes great pride in her heritage and the strong family values that have shaped her life. Admiring her parents as her heroes, and regarding her siblings as best friends, she cares deeply for her loved ones and fosters close relationships. Her best friends back home motivate her to make them proud, and she would not be the person she is without them. When she is not at work or focusing on law school, Valeria likes to spend time with her girlfriend since high school, Danielle, and their two cats, Dumpling and Vera. Together they like to watch sports, explore new places, and go on whatever adventure life takes them.

Q & A to Anna:

1. Why did you decide to work at FWI Legal?

I chose to join FWI Legal because I appreciated the dedication of the firmIMG 0883 to help people through the complicated legal process, and treating them as people rather than just cases. The team dynamic is something I cherish, especially being so new to working in law, and everyone at the firm is so welcoming. I thought it was an ideal opportunity to join FWI Legal in order to advance my abilities while being involved in a cause which is worthwhile and benefits the society.

2. Why Colorado rather than Texas?

My girlfriend and her family have lived here for several years, and after having visited I fell in love with it. The mountain range and high altitude reminded me of Mexico, and all the outdoor activities that are available interested me. While I miss my friends and family back home, choosing FWI Legal in Colorado was the best move for me.

07605198 9053 433E 85F3 B70A5F9BB1953. How has your Mexican heritage influenced your perspective and approach to yor work in the legal field?

I have grown up in a culture that values community and support, and therefore, I have a deep-seated understanding of standing up for those who may not have a voice-especially regarding workplace injuries or personal hardships. I am also sensitive to special challenges that persons from diverse backgrounds can face in their effort to seek legal solutions, such as difficulties with a language barrier or cultural misunderstandings. Being able to speak Spanish and facilitating communication is something I take great pride in, and to know that this helps my clients feel heard and understood throughout the process is something I value. This is driven into my work from my heritage, which was instilled in me to want justice and equity in the legal landscape for all people.
